Sunday Bullets
- The Boy Scouts of America will start admitting female members.
- Allergan has apparently sold patents to a tribe, thus evading US patent law.The broken patent system finds yet another way to be even more broken.
- Harvey Weinstein was fired from the company bearing his name, and yesterday expelled from the Motion Picture Academy. Weinstein ironically funded the dreadful, unapologetic film The Hunting Ground, which goes to show you can't start the public rehabilitation process too early. But unlike Bill Cosby, whose studied "America's Dad" role belied the creeper beneath, Weinstein has no public goodwill, and was probably unknown to a large swath of the American public.
- Michael Clegg has a good review of Angela Saini's Inferior: How Science Got Women Wrong at Quillette. Excerpt:
I think Saini is right to be suspicious of an easy reach for the
biological, especially if that is merely an invocation of prejudices
about what is natural rather than a reference to the actual science.
However, social explanation will always be challenged in accounting for
deep, cross-cultural regularities in human behaviour. If authors want to
advance such arguments as alternatives to the biological then they need
to do so with caution. It is wrong to assume that social explanations
are commonsensical and can be approached without theory, and it is wrong
to assume that evidence in history doesn’t need the same care as
evidence in science.
- Lynn Saxon deconstructs the typical view of bonobos as egalitarian, promiscuous, and nonviolent in The Naked Bonobo.
- Blade Runner 2049 is misogynistic because it shows women as prostitutes. Okay. Wired? Tired.
